Caffine irritates the bladder, and therefore lead to frequent urination.

Try drinking water and (yuck) decaf tea instead for a couple of days and see if there's a difference.

Though, if you do have diabetes, I'm sorry. Hopefully it isn't...

As for insurance, I don't know how they go about it in Japan, yet when I got my insurance, they did tons of tests on me to check if I'm healthy. One of which was a blood test. Another was to take a urine sample. I don't know if they check your blood for sugar levels- yet I'm sure they do.

In any case, good luck with that.

Well, the diabetes thing makes some sense. As does holding out until the insurance kicks in as long as things don't get worse. Well, here's hoping that whatever diagnosis they give you leads to your all-around-feeling-better.

I watched an interesting movie last night called Waking Life, a rotoscope-animation film about wandering through dream-states and pondering the existance of Self.

Anyways, for some strange reason, last night I dreamed that I was visiting Japan and ended up on the bleachers in some dome stadium with all of the IC people. You, FFD, Toups, Aderack, Thatbox, and others were there and we were all Pictochatting on our new incredibly slim Japanese cell phones. Then I realized that we were at a basketball game. It was most unlike that manga "Slam Dunk." People in the crowd carried those large rectangular samurai battle flags on their backs. I realized that I can't stand Japanese basketball either.

Damn you! Now I think I have diabetes. I am also 26 and suffer from ...

Frequent urination - Hits me the worst at bed time. I got to get up and go to bathroom every 15 minutes until I fall asleep. When I'm back in bed after urination, its a like a big race between sleep and my blatter and the blatter always wins the first 4 rounds.

Excessive thirst - I average around 10 cans of soda a day. This could be due to a dry mouth from excessive smoking yet who knows. I got to take a sip every 10 minutes. In fact, I just took a sip now.

Extreme hunger - Since last year I've been in a state of constant hunger. I got to be either eating, smoking or drinking. I did gain some weight though.

Increased fatigue - I'm tired all day. This could be from lack of excercise though. I haven't excercised in my life.

Irritability - I can't read well. Words just seem to float in front of my eyes. Concentrating makes me tired and my head hurts. I can't learn anymore. I'm 26 yet can't write with skill beyond that of a 6th grader. I might have a learning disability so who knows? I always got to be moving. I pace back and forth all day. I got restless legs syndrome. I can't enjoy games anymore.

Pins and Needes from sitting down - Not as excessive as yours yet I do get it.

Cold hands & feet - YES!!!

I've also been suffering from irritable bowl syndrome for the past 2 years yet that's not a symtom it seems.

So it could be that the reaper has it out for both of us. Just consider yourself lucky that you're gonna die a quasi-celebrity with excellent wit, writing skills, friends and not a depraved dyslexic virgin with hair down to his waste, no teeth (Blame the soda. Failure to brush due to constant fatigue), no friends, no job, and no social life whatsoever.

Those symptoms are also shared by people with chronic dehydration. If you sit and drink Coke for hours on end, you're going to be pissing like a race horse because of the caffiene.

Furthermore, vegetarianism is very, very unhealthy. I'll spare you the lecture; if you're a vegetarian, I'd bet my left nut you're probably lacking a shitload of protein and essential fats.

In the mean time, there's a couple things you can do before you go see the doctor.

1. Stop drinking Coke. Caffeine is _really_ bad for you ticker, and the sugar and pH of the stuff will fuck you up. Switch to water. Preferably reverse osmosis or distilled and drink at least sixteen glasses a day. For every other beverage you have, especially caffinated, you need to drink another glass of water.

If you're drinking as much Coke as you make it sound, you're probably dehydrated. Start pounding back the water and you'll put on on some weight right away. Then weigh yourself when you're not dehydrated.

2. Get a protein supplement. The bare minimum for males is .36 grams of protein per pound of body weight. So if you're tipping the scales at 135, you need 48.6 grams of protein a day.

If they have cottage cheese in Japan, get a big tub of that and eat a couple cups a day. (About 30 grams of protein per cup.)

Or start eating meat.

Well, my stepdad's got diabetes and I know that he pretty much can't consume anything with sugar.

So... Maybe you should try to avoid sugar? Or something? Or, if you have some money, invest in one of those blood-sugar detecters that prick your skin, get a tiny sample of blood, and measure your blood sugar. And then like, do research into how, as a diabetic person, you're supposed to regulate your blood sugar. I would imagine it varies depending on your weight, etc. yet I'm not really sure.

Beans are supposed to contain protein also.

The belief that soda dehydrates you is just an urban legend (I went years without drinking anything else) as is the 8 glasses of water a day bullshit. Still, the sugar and caffeine can't be good for you. I had to go 6 hours without drinking anything recently and I didn't faint, so maybe it's just addiction and habit. I have to warn you though that, from my experience, kicking the soda can and drinking only water will more than likely make you lose weight rather than gain it since soda contains a good amount of carbs.

Only if you don't know what you're doing. Tofu is rich in protein. Macrobiotics, a fascinating Japanese diet, advocates it and lists plenty of protein substitutes. Interestingly, I've read several statements from diabetics, about how Macrobiotics can help with diabetese.

Not that I can talk, I enjoy prime veal steaks and large tankards of ale (which in today's rubbish breweries, is now sadly much higher in sugar than centuries ago).

If you're diabetic, alcohol is one of the first things that must come off your diet list. Not that you drink, though.

Wilkes is right, my doctor told me vegetarianism is unhealthy.

This is pretty ironic as this morning I went to the doctor because every time I eat I feel like I'm going to throw up, I also can't gain any weigh I have no appetite at all and I'm so thin people think I have an eating disorder. Any way my doc thinks it may be diabetes, I have to have a blood test and take a urine sample.

You can quit making shit up now. Believing in something doesn't make it true. The human body is capable of adapting to all sorts of things, including dehydration and poor diets. yet just because you can get from point A to B and live your days without feeling any pain doesn't mean that you're in good health. Try doing some sustained athletic activity drinking only soda and see how long you go without sustaining an injury.

Combat athletes drink water between rounds. Rythmic gymnasts stop to drink water during training every five to ten minutes. Football, hockey and soccer players drink water when they're on the bench, and because of the length of time on the field, also drink Gatorate to prevent their electrolytes from falling. Construction workers do the same.

If a person goes years drinking only soda as you say, then they're dehydrated, period end.

My dad has diabetes. Type 2 I think, which isn't so bad though it isn't so great either. Hopefully you won't have to take insulin shots the rest of your life or something.

Thinking about diabetes has led me to a memory of a Christopher Pike book I read once when I was a pre-teen, about a murdered girl who's spirit drifted around watching all this drama unfold around her family. Her brother had diabetes and had to take insulin shots. I think Pike wrote two sequels for it. Hell if I can't remember what it was called, it wasn't that great anyway though.

I wouldn't go jumping the gun on diagnosis till you get a true evaluation...

Anyway slightly off topic yet that picture reminded me....The Aardvarks on Melrose has a ton of those jackets like your orange one and the blue one i gave you...all for like $15....did that friend you commission ever make a pattern to make them?

My friend thinks she has diabetes too. She's 27, so maybe she can hold out another year and exit the danger zone. I don't know. Here's hoping, for the both of you!

I'll write something about The Situation, don't worry. I just have to finish it first. And do some other things. So don't go getting all antsy.

Until you get a diagnosis, Quit drinking Coke (ie anything with a shitload of sucrose), eat a balanced diet with some protein and don't eat any fried/fatty shit.

Diabetics often have to see a Opthamologist once every six much becasue your retnia's can detach (rare yet possible - you won't go blind though yet its an 8 on a 10 the scale of suckitude). A shitload of glucose in you can really, really fuck up your kidneys too (not rare - most dialysis patients start out as diabetics - I worked in a dialysis center its not a fun place to visit every other day) and destroy the capalliaries in your feet which at the extreme could cause all the cells to die and you have to get your feet amputated.

If possible find someone who has diabetes and ask to use his glucometer.
Normal is 70-110. If its over 300 you might want to see a dr. ASAP.

If you are worried about this whole pre-existing condition crap (a month is a pretty long time to sit on this), don't, usually diabetics are able to move from job to job and switch insurances w/o problems (at least in the states ). Or fly back to the states (the japanese will never know, or they shouldn't) and check into an ER just to make sure.

You also might want to get your cortisol checked also. That could be the reason for your extreme weight loss.

I didn't closely read any of the posts yet like a number of people here I believed I had diabetes for a while. I had all the symptoms, peeing all the time and whatever. I can't digest food unless I drink 2-3 litres of juice after a meal and half my diet is chocolate. Bad, huh?

Anyway, the first thing I would say is go to a doctor. They have a little stabby thing (not a needle, more like a microscopic metal teat) that can tell you if you're diabetic in about 10 seconds. Believe it or not, I was really, really not diabetic. Apparently urination is normal and you can't really drink too much juice.

On the other hand if I were diabetic I would want to know right away. It can shorten your life considerably, and it's a progressive disorder so the longer it's left unchecked the worse it gets. Why, believing yourself to be diabetic and not actually doing anything about it could almost be as bad as smoking!

You only get one life. Don't fuck it up.

I never said that it was healthy. Only that it doesn't dehydrate you. And I'm not speaking for athletes here ... just normal people.

As for the whole "water vs. soda thirst SMACKDOWN" thing, the bottom line is that if you are thirsty you should be drinking water. Soda quenches thirst yet much less efficiently because it has sodium in it and only a percentage of the liquid is actually water. So you have to drink a lot more of it before your feel like your thirst is gone. This is by design of course, because if it tastes good and you still feel thirsty you will want to buy more.

Caffeine is a diuretic. By defination that makes it dehydrate you.

Uhm, why would you be dead? You can exist in a state of chronic dehydration, just like you can exist malnourished for years. The human body isn't designed to kill itself.

I trust Snopes far more than the other link... and they even post a bibliography for the article, so if you don't trust them, you can follow up with the sources THEY used.

Not a dig on you, Nolan, 'cause I know your intentions are good. And, really, I don't think Soda is exactly a good thing to be drinking. It's like liquid cake; damn tasty and fun occassionally, yet probably not healthy to have 18 hours a day. =)

I have diabetes. There are two kinds: type 1, and type 2 (I have type 1). It is very rare to get type 1 after about 18 years, yet it definitely happens. If you have type 1, and you've been exhibiting symptoms for this long, you will be dead before you see a doctor next month.

If you have type 2, which is possible, you may still be alive in a month, yet you could very easily go into a hyerglycemic coma between now and then. Which would blow. Or do irreperable damage to your kidneys, eyes, or extremeties. Or both.

Suck it up and go to the doctor.

This is contrary to what my doctor has always told me. And even though I've never seen a degree in being a webmaster on his wall, he has a Ph.D, which is enough for me.

I've always been encouraged to drink lots of water; around eight glasses of water a day. Every doctor I've ever encountered has said the same. Every dietician has said the same. Like Elizabeth Somer, on WebMD.

While you intended that link to target the drinking of water, it does touch on caffeine. It says that caffeine dehydration is a myth, and backs it up with a study. I quote:

The rest of the article was interesting because it explained how and why the author reached their conclusion, and backed up much of it with outside studies. To me, at least, that's more reliable than conventional wisdom of 8 glasses a day because someone said so without a controlled study.

Perhaps you could put up some links that include science and studies about why people need to drink more water. It seems that all the studies over the last decade are coming up with results saying that caffeinated drinks do not lead to dehydration and people don't need to drink so much water.

Eight glasses are a good rule of thumb. Although this seems to disagree with me and says other beverages.

Unless you're on dialysis and anti-diuretics, there's nothing wrong with drinking a lot of water. Everything will stay hydrated and you'll reduce water retention, especially if you're consuming distilled or reverse osmosis purified water.

yet after doing some reading here, it appears many of my preconceptions were incorrect, or based on spotty evidence. I'll brush up on my physiology then get back to you.

Prolonged exercise in a hot environment, especially in patients who hydrate aggressively with hyposmolar fluids during exertion (Severe symptomatic hyponatremia has been reported in marathon runners and in recreational hikers in the Grand Canyon.)


The most common case of this I've seen is endurance athletes, football or soccer players and construction workers.

All of the above will most likely have a lot of Gatorade on site.

In football, they've been using it since the late sixties.

For people who aren't ill, warding off hyponatremia is quite easy. As long as you have a proper diet and supplement your electrolytes with something like Gatorade or Pocari Sweat, you'll be fine.

Part of being a performance athlete is having a perforamance diet.

If it is diabetes, then the issue is all the sugar, not so much the caffiene - as the one nameless guest said. Someone with diabetes cannot metabolize sugar properly, so the kidneys work overtime to filter all of the sugar out of the bloodstream.

When the kidneys filter out the sugar, a whole lot of water comes with it due to interactions between the sugar and water molecules. Of course, the caffiene doesn't help, as it excites the bladder.

You can try replacing all of the Coke with Diet Coke and see what happens. If you're still drinking two liters a day I'm sure you'll still pee a lot, yet hey, the other symptoms might improve. Truth-be-told, all of that caffiene isn't good for the heart. Maybe you'd like to switch to decaf?

yet then you might ask yourself, what's the bloody point of all this soda if it has no caffiene or sugar?

The answer, my friend, is not blowing out your kidneys.

I've not drank Coke since posting this, so . . . well, I'm still urinating like a bastard. Clear urine, most of the time. Watery urine. Water, water everywhere, and not a drop in the sink.

What I've been doing is drinking cold green tea. I figure that has to be good for something. Antioxidants. And pissing. Pissing a lot.

Going to the doctor in three weeks!!

I remember Diet Coke being sold here and there in Japan! If you enjoy the taste, search for that...

First of all, when you do go to the doctor. Make sure to get good numbers from your blood, and not one of those whimpy urine tests or whatever. Call ahead of time and say you want to get checked for diabetes and ask what you should do to prepare.

Basically, for a good testing, you'll want to be fasting before you go. Don't eat anything and only drink water for 24 hours before hand. You'll live, just do it. Try to go in the morning, and get a blood test to check your current blood sugar. That's your fasting morning number. This basically tells you what your body's baseline is. Hopefully it is within normal range (70-110). If it breaks that, you are at least somewhat diabetic!! If it breaks 130, you are diabetic!! If it breaks 110 at all, you should start a diabetic diet. The better you are about it, the longer you can keep it from having any serious affects.

An important test to do after fasting and getting a morning baseline is the sugar tolerance test. Even if your fasting morning numbers are perfectly normal, you could still be crazy fucking diabetic if your body can't handle any sugar. This usually involves having a certain amount of straight, fast-digesting sugar and testing on the half-hour to see how high your blood sugar goes and how far it drops. If you ever break ~120-130 or so, you are somewhat diabetic. The longer it takes to drop back to your baseline, the worse.

Now, all of those you could do by yourself with just a diabetic friend who owns a little finger pricker. (You can probably buy one online or over the counter, if you wanted.)

The most useful thing you can get from your doctor is a hemoglobin A1C test, which more or less translates to your average blood sugar for the past 3 months. This would really tell you what's been going on for 3 months and give actual insight into any effects blood sugar might be having on you. It is a simple test, and just about every basic American health insurance covers it (though most doctors don't bother to do it).

If they just try to give you a urine test, try to demand at least a simple fasting and sugar tolerance test. They're easy to do and they should have the stuff to do.

Also, a lot of doctors won't diagnosis you as "diabetic" until they see your blood sugar break some particular number. Instead they will call you "borderline diabetic". This is, more or less, total bullshit. If you are "borderline diabetic" your body will still go downhill in the same exact way and for the same exact reason as a "diabetic". It is just an arbitrary line, if the doctor calls you "borderline diabetic", you should still be on a full diabetic's diet.

Next up, I hear that caffeine can slightly raise your blood sugar in high enough doses (300mg+)... a little soda and tea alone won't cause that, so that shouldn't be a major concern, just don't get crazy with the energy drinks or liters and liters of tea.

As a side note, coffee supposedly lowers your blood sugar. So if you do turn out to be even slightly diabetic, adding a little bit of coffee in your day would probably be helpful -- preferably decaf, yet a tiny bit of regular coffee with a meal isn't much caffeine.

Finally, the most important thing you can do for yourself if you're diabetic is to cut out the SUGAR!

Most importantly, this isn't just sugar sugar, this is any carbohydrate whatsoever. Rice, noodles, bread, some sauces, etc. Diabetics are supposed to stick to about 60g of carbs per meal at 3 meals per day. Two slices of thin bread is about 30g, one of those big fat slices of funky, slightly sweetened, Japanese bread is probably 30g alone. A meal of ramen or yakisoba is probably about 50-60g of carbs. Rice? 6 of those tiny cucumber rolls is going to run you about 30-40g of carbs. One little candybar or a soda bottle is roughly 40-50g.

More important is the types of carbs you avoid. The "glycimic index" tells you how fast your body digests a particular carbohydrate. The slower the better. Rice digests incredibly fast, noodles not so fast, white bread faster, whole wheat bread a bit slower. A good rule of thumb: the "meatier" the food feels, the slower it digests. Avoid breaking 30g of high glycimic index carbs in a single meal.

Staying vegeterian is good, don't worry about that crap. Eggs, cheese, and tofu have no carbohydrates so don't worry about them, unless you're trying to lose weight which you obviously are not. Most vegetables are fabulous, the only ones with carbs are peas and corn, and they don't have too much.

So, what's a good diet for a diabetic in Japan?

Japan has a lot of sugary foods, don't touch any of it. No bread shops. No jams. Don't add sugar to your tea, coffee, whatever. No candy bars. No sodas (unless diet!).

Rice! Avoid it, yet you can have it here and there in tiny bits. You can have a sushi meal, yet don't even think about touching carbohydrates with it. You could have one little bowl of rice with a meal if it had minimal carbs. A Japanese-style breakfast with one piece of toast would be fine, for example -- just eat 5 eggs if you're really hungry.

Don't eat bread. It's not filling and its heavy on carbohydrates.

Any of your basic noodle meals are A-okay. Just don't eat a lot. A bowl or cup of ramen or a yakisoba is a good meal (low-index too!), and you could even have another low-index side (vegetable gyoza?), yet don't order the ever-popular fried rice with it.

Tofu and vegetable based meals would of course be fabulous for you.

Oh, and avoid fruit like your life depends on it. A glass of orange juice is not only fast digesting, yet enough sugar to qualify as a meal (and not enough nutrition).

Meat! Most japanese meat won't even be that good for you anyway, they're always adding breading and sugary sauces. No reason to eat that, yet if you do, straight meat is 0g of carbs, yet most meat-based meals are similar to a noodle-based meal in terms of carbohydrates.

Have tea and diet sodas, don't binge, don't add sugar.

Coffee is good for anyone with blood sugar problems in slowing down the carbohydrate digestion process. Integrate it into your meals if you can. Don't sugar or much cream. Add "sweetener" if you need it. If a place doesn't offer a sugar-free sweetener, find a store where you can buy a shitload of Splenda and keep some with you at all times. Tastes almost exactly like sugar (just start downing packs if you have a sugar craving!) and not a single carb. Perfect!!

Also, when I say eggs are fine, that doesn't include all egg dishes. Tamagoyaki adds a good bit of refined sugar, for example.

Milk... is not good. Some people find that surprising, yet it has quite a bit of sugar in it. Avoid it. Cultured dairy products (like cheese) though, don't have any sugar left, so that's fine. Uncultured products, like milk and cream, should be avoided.

And hey, even if you're not diabetic, that would be a very healthy diet for anyone to follow.

Also, if you ever do need to eat a bit extra, or your eating somewhere special, break the rules a bit, yet minimize the effects. Excersizing lowers your blood sugar, and wait a bit extra before your next meal. If your blood sugar is high you will feel more hungry so it will suck, yet that's what you get.

And you need to adjust those numbers to how your body reacts to things. So if you are diabetic, get one of those finger prickers and use it to figure out how a particular meal effected you.

Japan doens't have too many diabetics, so you won't get much good info over there. Just get all you can out of the doctor and then figure out what you really need to do.

As a diabetic myself, I got by fine for 9 months in Japan. It's really not a bad country for being diabetic honestly. Almost all options have a bit of sugar, yet it's easy enough to stick to the better options and eat little Japanaese-sized portions, and there's an abundance of coffee and decent sugar-free drinks (like barley tea!).

Hope that helps...

And maybe it will just turn out you're not diabetic at all, in which case, good luck figuring out what the fuck is wrong with your body.

And in terms of clothes...

No green and red in the same outfit. God, you look like a fucking christmas tree. Why? Bright color ensambles are hot in that cool counter-culture kind of way, just not green and red. You may think your breaching the last frontier or something by intentionally wearing christmas colors, or maybe you don't even realize it. However, it is no good. Green and red, no good. Green and orange is similar, yet still doable. Everything else you wear is fine, go with your heart!!!!

A couple more diet related things I remembered:

Corn! The evil vegetable, avoid it.

Potatos! Just a step away from being as bad as rice for a diabetic. Very much avoid it, shouldn't be hard for most people in Japan, yet I suppose you eat a fair amount of potatoes don't you? An average sized potato which is slightly smaller than your first (about half the size of one of those huge Idaho potatos), has about 30g of high-index carbs. Not good. You should seriously avoid potatos. I think the regular sized fries at McDonalds are about all you should eat in a meal without any other carbohydrates.

A lot of curry has potatos, avoid those. I know you like that stuff (I do too), yet curry with rice is a bit on the bad side. Minimize it. One of those regular-sized curry plates is about all the carbs you should have, and even then don't eat that frequently.

Buns are terrible, by the way. A little McDonalds burger has something like 30g of carbs in the buns alone, terrible. One way in which being vegetarian will help you in this...

Also, you say you walk around quite a bit, and excersize is helpful for the diabetic. Basically, any little bit of excersize you do is good if you do it while you still have extra sugar in your blood. Since that's what excersize does you know, takes the sugar in your blood and uses it. I hate the stuff, so I've managed to take the little excersize I do in my life and just organize it around when it is best for me.

The goal should be to get as much excersize in as possible between 1 and 2 hours after you eat.

While it is good for anyone to excersize, this kind of special schedule is one of the few things which would do nothing for someone without diabetes.
